The name Gordon comes from the Lowland Barony of Gordon in Berwickshire and is first recorded in 1150. In the 14th century the family migrated to Aberdeenshire, where Sir Adam, Lord of Gordon, was granted the lands of Strathbogie by King Robert the Bruce. His descendant became the Earl of Huntly in 1449 and subsequently the Marquis of Huntly, long known as “The Cock O’ the North”. The Gordon tartan was apparently designed in 1793 at the time that the 4th Duke of Gordon formed a regiment known as the Gordon Highlanders. Dress Gordon is a variation of the Gordon tartan.
