The BOSS-2 is Mercury's most flexible dual-speed floor machine: one machine accepts five interchangeable apron sizes (13", 15", 17", 19", and 21") mounted via thumb-screw, allowing a single unit to cover restrooms with the 13" apron and open corridors with the 21". It runs the same 1.5 HP A/C dual-capacitor motor as the single-speed BMT-175-Y but adds a second speed — 175 RPM for scrubbing and stripping, 300 RPM for spray buffing and polishing. The triple-planetary transmission eliminates startup torque across both speed settings.

The dual-capacitor A/C motor starts smoothly and maintains speed under varying load — it handles the torque demand of switching between apron sizes without adjustment. The universal clutch plate accepts most aftermarket pad drivers in sizes matching each apron. At 175 RPM: black pads strip, green/blue scrub.
