The Mount St. Helens eruption on May 18, 1980, was the deadliest in U.S. history, killing 57 people and destroying 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway. Triggered by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, the eruption caused a debris avalanche and reduced the mountain’s summit from 9,677 feet to 8,363 feet, creating a 1-mile wide crater. The mountain remains under active surveillance by USGS and others.
