Oregano oil's antimicrobial reputation is built on carvacrol — a phenolic monoterpenoid that disrupts bacterial cell membrane integrity by embedding into the phospholipid bilayer, increasing membrane permeability, causing ion leakage, and triggering membrane depolarization that leads to cell death. This mechanism is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and importantly, against bacteria that have developed resistance to conventional antibiotics — carvacrol does not share the target sites (cell wall synthesis, ribosomal subunits, DNA gyrase) that antibiotic resistance mechanisms exploit. At sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations, carvacrol also inhibits bacterial quorum sensing and biofilm formation — the chemical communication networks that allow bacteria to coordinate virulence and form protective biofilms. Thymol, a secondary phenolic compound present alongside carvacrol, acts via a similar but complementary membrane disruption mechanism. California Natural standardizes to 70% carvacrol content — the critical variable that most oregano oil products don't disclose. At 400mg per capsule, this is a clinically relevant dose. 90 vegetarian capsules. Made in the USA.
