Cabernet Onion is a striking and flavorful variety known for its deep red bulbs and crisp, sweet taste. These medium-sized onions have smooth, papery skin and firm flesh, making them perfect for slicing into salads, layering on sandwiches, or adding a bold touch to roasted dishes. Thriving in full sun and nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, Cabernet Onions mature in about 100-110 days, delivering consistent yields of high-quality bulbs. This variety performs well in traditional garden beds or raised beds and is resistant to common onion diseases, ensuring healthy growth throughout the season. The vibrant red color adds visual appeal to your kitchen creations, while the rich, slightly sweet flavor enhances a wide range of dishes. Cabernet Onion is also a good keeper, storing well for months in a cool, dry place. Whether you’re growing them for fresh eating, cooking, or preserving, these onions are a versatile and reliable addition to your vegetable garden.

Onion - Cabernet - Allium cepa

Biennial F1 Hybrid. Globe-shaped medium red onion with a nice internal color. Colorful red rings makes this a great sliced onion for burgers. Late-intermediate day onion that finishes earlier than long-day reds. Will store 4-6 months.

Did You Know? Red onions contain compounds called flavonoids which are great antioxidants. These are found mostly in the outer layers so remove as little of the peel as possible to retain the antioxidants.

Soil and Water: Onions prefer loose, fertile, friable, well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter. They do best in soils with a pH of 6.0 -7.0. Their shallow root system is sensitive to fluctuations in water. Mulch to conserve water and control weeds.

Planting and Growing: Sow seeds indoors in flats in early spring or sow seed outdoors as soon as the soil is workable. Cover seeds with 1/4" of fine soil. Allow 12"-18" between rows. When seedlings reach 4" tall, thin or transplant 6" apart. Thinned plants can be eaten like green onions. Cut off seed heads as they form.

Harvesting & Storage: When mature, bend the tops, expose the bulb and let it stay in the ground until the leaves turn brown. Lift bulbs from the soil, braid tops, and hang outside, in the shade, to dry for at least 7 days. Store in ventilated, cool, dry area.

Soil Temperature: 50-85°F
Planting Depth: 1/4-1/2"
Germination: 3-8 Days
Height At Maturity: 2-3'
Days to Maturity: 105 Days
Sun/Shade: Full Sun
