Detailed Description
Bee-Pro® Protein Patties are a pollen substitute feeding supplement used to support honey bee colonies when natural pollen sources are scarce. The patties are placed inside the hive, where bees can consume them directly. Adding protein to the colony encourages brood rearing by stimulating the queen to lay more eggs, which can help increase colony population, particularly during early spring buildup.
According to the manufacturer, Bee-Pro® patties include Pro-Health, a digestive health aide formulated to promote increased consumption of patties and medicated feeds. Manufacturer testing reports overall brood production increased by approximately 1½ to 3 frames compared to control hives when using Bee-Pro® patties.
Protein patties should be used thoughtfully. Rapid population growth can contribute to early swarming if colonies expand too quickly. Patties are also attractive to small hive beetles, which can lay eggs in uneaten feed. A common best practice is to divide patties into smaller 1–2 inch strips or pieces so bees can consume them more quickly.
Each Bee-Pro® patty weighs approximately 1 pound (454 grams) and contains a minimum of 12% protein. The patties are ready to feed straight from the package and are not weather dependent, making them a convenient option for targeted colony nutrition.
