This one-gallon black jar is four times the size of the typical feeder jar most beekeepers use, meaning fewer refill trips while still fitting an entrance feeder. It shares the same exterior dimensions as a milk jug, so it stacks and stores easily in standard milk crates. The black color and built-in UV inhibitor add durability, resisting brittleness and sun damage over time — the dark color can warm up a bit faster in direct sun, but it also blocks light that would otherwise degrade your syrup faster, so it's a net plus for most setups.
The compact height fits under a telescoping cover on a single deep box, or works as a top feeder above a circle-top inner cover or as a Boardman-style entrance feeder.
Fill the jar with your sugar syrup mix and securely attach a 70mm mason jar lid (not included) — mason lids vary slightly by manufacturer, so if you're using one you already have on hand rather than ours, double-check the fit before filling. Poke several small holes in the flat part of the lid with a nail or a small drill bit — a handful of holes is usually enough for bees to feed without the syrup dripping too fast. Invert it for use with a Boardman feeder, or place it upright inside a deep box above your inner cover. Its short profile allows use even on single-box hives under a telescoping cover — make sure the lid is tightly sealed to prevent leaks.
