Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is native to the hardwood forests of eastern North America — and it was harvested so heavily over the 20th century that it is now listed as a threatened species in most of its native range. This context matters: Herb Pharm grows goldenseal on their own certified organic farm in southern Oregon, which is meaningful as a conservation contribution alongside the supplement's botanical value. The primary active alkaloid is berberine — a yellow isoquinoline alkaloid that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase II, interfering with DNA replication in a mechanism distinct from conventional antibiotics; this is why berberine shows activity against multidrug-resistant strains that have evolved resistance to antibiotic classes. Berberine also inhibits bacterial and fungal adhesion to mucosal epithelial cells — relevant for respiratory tract and digestive tract infections where pathogens must first adhere to succeed. Goldenseal's second alkaloid, hydrastine, has a vasoconstrictive effect on mucous membranes that reduces secretions and addresses the "boggy," inflamed mucosal tissue typical of sinus congestion. Classically used short-term (1–2 weeks) during acute immune challenges — not for daily maintenance. Certified organic root and rhizome. Herb Pharm has grown goldenseal since 1979.
Add 30–40 drops to water or juice, up to 4 times daily. Best used short-term (1–2 weeks maximum) during acute immune challenges. Cycle off for at least 1–2 weeks between uses. Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant or on medications.
