Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is one of the classic bitter herbs in Western botanical medicine — and one of the most pharmacologically specific. Its primary active constituents are absinthin and artabsin, sesquiterpene lactone compounds responsible for its intensely bitter taste. When bitter compounds contact the tongue and upper GI tract, they activate TAS2R (bitter taste receptor) family receptors — these trigger a cascade through the vagus nerve that stimulates gastric acid secretion, bile production and flow from the gallbladder, and pancreatic enzyme release. This is the fundamental mechanism by which digestive bitters "prime" the digestive system before meals — the classic "cephalic phase" digestive response. Artemisia absinthium also contains a range of volatile oils and Artemisia-specific compounds that contribute broad antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity, which is the basis for its traditional use in gut parasite protocols alongside black walnut and clove. Certified organic, liquid extract for rapid absorption.
Add 20–40 drops to a small amount of water or juice, 2–3 times daily between meals, or as directed by an herbalist or healthcare provider. Bitter taste is normal and intended. Not for use during pregnancy or for extended periods exceeding 4 weeks. Consult a healthcare provider if taking medications.
