Sweet Tropical Fruit with Star-Shaped Slices
Star Fruit Seedling (Averrhoa carambola) is an evergreen tropical fruit tree with woody, drooping branches that makes a beautiful and useful addition to the home landscape. Easy to grow and highly productive, it produces an abundance of uniquely shaped fruit beneath exotic purple flowers.
In tropical to subtropical climates, Star Fruit can fruit nearly year-round, with carambola reaching its best flavor when allowed to ripen on the tree to a yellow-orange color. Enjoy the sweet fruit fresh, in tea, alongside other fruits and desserts, or as a garnish for tropical dishes. Our Star Fruit seedlings are capable of producing fruit within 2–3 years.
Cultural & Culinary Significance
Star Fruit, also known as Carambola, is prized throughout tropical and subtropical regions for its unusual five-sided fruit and sweet, refreshing flavor. The fruit is commonly enjoyed fresh and sliced into its signature star shapes, but it can also be added to teas, desserts, fruit combinations, and tropical-inspired dishes. Its beautiful fruit and flowers make it equally valued as an ornamental and edible tree.
Why Grow Star Fruit Seedling?
Growing Tips
(Also known as: Star Fruit, Carambola, Averrhoa carambola*)*
Star Fruit grows best in full sun to part shade and rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture. Give it plenty of room to develop its woody, drooping branches and protect young trees from frost. Regular watering and feeding will encourage the vigorous growth and abundant fruit production these trees are known for. For the sweetest fruit, allow carambola to ripen on the tree until it reaches a yellow-orange color.
