This Vespa Catch by Veto Pharma is designed to maximize the capture of Asian hornets while limiting the trapping of other pests. It's built with a cover pierced by two entrance wells, and the lid includes a tunnel that concentrates odors, shields ambient light, and prevents trapped wasps and hornets from escaping. It's easy to fill and refresh the attractant, and can sit on a flat surface or hang in the right spot.

In 15-day field testing in Portugal, it caught 2.3 times more Asian hornets than a Tap-Trap and 5.7 times more than a DIY wasp bottle trap.

DIY Hornet and Wasp Lure

A common DIY Asian hornet lure recipe uses equal parts beer (nothing fancy needed), white wine, and a natural fruit syrup — the alcohol repels bees while still attracting hornets. Stir together and pour into the trap, filling it no more than halfway. There are many variations on this recipe, but this combination works well.

Tips for Using the Trap

  • Traps take a few hours to start catching wasps.
  • Reposition the trap if it isn't catching any hornets.
  • Trapping works best when the daily high temperature exceeds 60°F.
  • Place traps along known Asian hornet passage areas for best results.
  • Don't clean the trap when renewing the solution — leaving residue improves efficiency.
  • Leaving a dead hornet in the trap when renewing the solution is recommended.

A dedicated attractant concentrate is also sold separately, in a single-dose (10ml) or 100-dose (1000ml) size, with a graduated dosing cap that makes it easy to measure out bait, sugar, and water for the mixture — availability may vary by season.
