Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is the European relative of the American blueberry, and it's one of the richest botanical sources of anthocyanins — specifically delphinidin, cyanidin, malvidin, petunidin, and peonidin glycosides. These anthocyanins support eye health through a specific mechanism: rhodopsin, the light-sensitive pigment in retinal rod cells responsible for low-light vision, is continuously bleached by light exposure and must be continuously regenerated. Bilberry anthocyanins accelerate the regeneration of rhodopsin by enhancing the activity of the enzyme retinol dehydrogenase — supporting night vision and dark adaptation. The anthocyanins also cross-link collagen in blood vessel walls, strengthening the microcapillaries in the retina and reducing permeability. Herb Pharm extracts certified organic bilberry berry in alcohol for a concentrated liquid supplement.
