Black walnut hull (Juglans nigra) is one of the three herbs in the classic herbal intestinal cleanse protocol — alongside wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and clove. The primary active compound is juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) — a naphthoquinone that exerts antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity through disruption of the mitochondrial electron transport chain in susceptible organisms (fungi, parasites, and some bacteria). Juglone inhibits NADH-CoQ reductase (Complex I) and succinate dehydrogenase (Complex II), impairing ATP synthesis — which is effectively fungicidal and antiparasitic without the toxicity concerns associated with pharmaceutical antiparasitic drugs. The hull also contains substantial ellagitannins and gallotannins that contribute broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity through protein precipitation (denaturing microbial surface proteins) and direct antibiofilm disruption. Herb Pharm uses organically grown green hulls — harvested before they turn brown and dry, when juglone concentration is at peak. Liquid extraction in alcohol preserves the full phenolic profile. From Herb Pharm since 1979. Not recommended during pregnancy.
Add 30–40 drops to water or juice, 2–3 times daily between meals. Typically used in 2–3 week cycles with breaks between. Often combined with wormwood and clove tinctures for the full three-herb protocol. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
