Black walnut hull (Juglans nigra) is one of the three herbs in the classic herbal intestinal cleanse protocol — alongside wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and clove. The primary active compound is juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) — a naphthoquinone that exerts antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity through disruption of the mitochondrial electron transport chain in susceptible organisms (fungi, parasites, and some bacteria). Juglone inhibits NADH-CoQ reductase (Complex I) and succinate dehydrogenase (Complex II), impairing ATP synthesis — which is effectively fungicidal and antiparasitic without the toxicity concerns associated with pharmaceutical antiparasitic drugs. The hull also contains substantial ellagitannins and gallotannins that contribute broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity through protein precipitation (denaturing microbial surface proteins) and direct antibiofilm disruption.
